Jefferson Lewis

Jefferson Lewis, a British citizen of Dominican heritage, has woven a rich tapestry of resilience, cultural pride, and community involvement throughout his life. His journey began in East London, where he grew up surrounded by a diverse, multicultural community. Jefferson’s early life was shaped by his strong family ties, a grounding in faith, and the values instilled by his parents—who emigrated from Dominica to build a better life in the UK. Though life was modest, his parents worked tirelessly, imparting lessons of hard work and perseverance to their children.

Jefferson’s education at St Bonaventure’s Roman Catholic school provided him with both challenges and opportunities. While navigating the competitive environment of the all-boys school, he developed a passion for technology and a drive for excellence. His curiosity about electronics eventually led him to embark on a career in data and computing. Jefferson’s path wasn’t without hurdles; he faced societal challenges, prejudice, and a lack of opportunities for young Black men in East London. Yet, Jefferson's determination saw him rise above these obstacles, cultivating expertise and earning recognition in the technology industry.

Faith played an integral role in Jefferson’s early years, providing a foundation for his values and approach to life. While he later transitioned from religion to a more spiritual outlook, the principles of integrity, accountability, and compassion remain at the heart of his philosophy. These ideals have not only guided his personal growth but also strengthened his family bonds. As a husband and father, Jefferson cherishes the sanctuary of his home as a place of love and connection amidst life’s challenges.

In recent years, Jefferson has found a sense of community and purpose through his involvement with the Over 50s Black Men’s Forum (O5BM) in Chelmsford. Joining in 2023, Jefferson quickly appreciated the camaraderie and shared experiences among the group. The forum offers much more than table tennis; it provides Jefferson and his peers a space to discuss health, share advice, and overcome the stigmas associated with vulnerability. Jefferson’s contributions to O5BM reflect his commitment to fostering connection and empowering others.

Jefferson’s story, from his vibrant East London childhood to his successful career and community engagement, embodies resilience, self-reflection, and the pursuit of excellence. His life is a testament to the power of determination and the enduring impact of community in shaping identities.
