Born in Hackney, London, in 1969, Julius Olu’s childhood was a portrait of warmth and connection. As the youngest of twelve siblings, he was surrounded by love and playfulness. His father, a law student in Oxford, and his mother, a seamstress who worked tirelessly to care for her children, profoundly influenced Julius’s upbringing. The family blended their London life with Nigerian cultural practices, introducing Julius to a vibrant mix of experiences and values.
When Julius turned eight, the family moved back to Nigeria, marking a transformative phase in his life. The adventure of adjusting to a new culture and environment enriched Julius’s perspective. He quickly learned to appreciate the challenges and opportunities presented by this shift, from schooling differences to a deeper connection with his roots. His father’s work as a magistrate and his mother’s entrepreneurial ventures showcased resilience and ambition—traits that would later guide Julius through his career.
Julius’s professional journey began with his studies in history and IT, eventually leading him back to England in 1993. Settling in Essex, Julius built a multifaceted career, navigating roles in administration, procurement, and social work. Despite facing challenges, including prejudice and undercurrents of discrimination, Julius carved out a successful path, becoming an Assistant Director for Independent Living, Commissioning and Partnerships for adult social care in Hammersmith and Fulham. His roles often merged a sense of purpose with practicality, as he worked to tackle inequalities and improve people’s health and wellbeing by improving social care systems and processes.
In Essex, Julius’s contributions extended beyond the workplace. His involvement with the Over 50s Black Men’s Forum (O5BM) in Chelmsford reflects his commitment to community-building and empowerment. O5BM provides companionship, physical activity, and mental health support, addressing issues like isolation and loneliness among Black men. Julius values the sense of camaraderie and cultural connection within the group, where discussions range from family dynamics to navigating healthcare challenges.
Through the themes of childhood, career, and community, Julius’s life story weaves resilience, adaptation, and a dedication to uplifting others. His experiences span continents, blending cultures and challenges into a rich tapestry of identity and purpose.
