Yomi, born in Manchester and raised in Nigeria, shares his journey from childhood to adulthood, highlighting his experiences with education, career, and family life.
Yomi was born in Manchester in 1972 but spent his childhood in Nigeria, where he attended nursery, primary, and secondary school before moving to the UK at age 19.
His father was a highly educated agronomist, while his mother was a merchant who supported the family financially through various businesses. Yomi enjoyed playing football and was considered an introvert, focusing heavily on education due to his father's influence.
Yomi struggled with concentration and did not achieve the cutoff points for university in Nigeria, eventually moving to the UK to pursue further education. He initially worked various part-time jobs in the UK and later transitioned into the information technology sector, working as a consultant. It was very hard studying and working night shifts at the time.
Throughout his career, Yomi had to support his family back in Nigeria, which influenced his decision to work as a consultant rather than pursuing higher corporate positions.
Yomi and his wife met in London and together they raised their children, prioritising their education and safety by moving to Essex. Yomi is involved in the 05BM organisation, appreciating the extracurricular activities and friendships it offers.
Yomi acknowledges the presence of racism in his early days in the UK but believes in focusing on hard work to succeed. He reflects on the importance of saving and investing early, given the financial support he had to provide to his family.
